Hi Jim !

Regretfully I won't be able to make it this evening. I've got some ugly bug in my system and don't want to kill off the majority of Canada's best net artists with a casual visit and a few misdirected coughs. I was very much looking forward to seeing Jhave again and meeting Sophia.

I'm sure it will be a great evening !

d

On Sun, Jul 8, 2012 at 11:46 AM, Jim Andrews <jim@vispo.com> wrote:
DAVID JHAVE JOHNSTON, SUNDAY JULY 8
************************************************

Jhave Johnston is one of the leading lights of digital poetry. I'm happy to be able to introduce some of you to his work. I published some of his work at http://vispo.com/jhave and you can see more of his work on his site at http://glia.ca . Jhave has been a digital poet for a long time. Even before he did a degree at Concordia in Computer Science. He then did a Masters at SFU and SIAT. He recently finished his doctorate in Montreal at Concordia studying with Jason Lewis. He has focussed mainly on net art. He knows Flash and ActionScript inside and out.

Alain Lioret from Paris may possibly join us at 10 pm via Skype. He teaches generative art at the U of Paris 8.

JHAVE JOHNSTON BIO:

Jhave is a Montreal-based digital-poet.
Focus: Language-based online digital art. Combinatorial poetics, multimedia poetry. Currently, developing works that feature typographic experiments built through a synthesis of Flash, Mudbox, Vegas, Ableton, After Effects and Mr. Softie.
Exhibition history: Agence Topo, Chambre Blanche, Champ Li bre , ELO, FILE, FOFA, Incident, Oboro, Turbulence among others. His work has been exhibited at 4 new media Biennales: Montreal '03, '09, '11 & Toronto '04. For more details see CV ( http://glia.ca/resume/David_Jhave_Johnston_CV.pdf )
Education: an undergrad degree in Computer Science; a Masters of Science in interactive art; & a PhD from Concordia University where he works as a research affiliate with OBX, TML & NT 2 .
Philosophy: Jhave uses algorithms as aesthetic tools; and believes that moist matter is quasisentient. His work is an attempt to harmoniously reconcile computation, emotion, concepts, and the ancient idea of artist as conduit. Since 1999, he has published language-art online (instead of on paper) at www.glia.ca . In the spring of 2011 he is releasing a usb-key version of a decade of this web-work.
GROUP OF X TALK:

I will show and discuss the making-of a set of recent works including MUPs (a mashup sound poetry gui), a short video-poem "Reading the Wind" made for the 2012 ELO (Electronic Literature Organization) conference, and an experiment built during last couple weeks. Talk will probably focus on the opportunities available and perils integral for literature as digital tools evolve.
