Summary
Arthur – the protagonist – is a ghostwriter. One day, Mark Krekov, an art dealer, asks Arthur to write a story about he and his wife Daria. Arthur's writing a story from Krekov's point of view. The couple collects art and tries to make ends meet. Daria gets to know a rich aspiring artist, Gregory Melon. The couple wants to get Melon's works from him for free. Melon does give away works — but only to successful families. He tells Arthur he knows they're not a real family, but impostors. The couple escapes and hides. Arthur finds a place to stay, but loses touch with Daria and lives there alone. One day, a policeman visits him – in connection with Daria. He escapes the policeman, tries to call Krekov, and understands that his identity has dissolved in Krekov's – who wanted Arthur to get rid of Daria on his behalf. Arthur understands Daria is dead, and knows where she's buried. He gets in touch with the police and tells them the story.
