Summary
Arthur – the protagonist – is a ghostwriter.
One day, Mark Krekov, an art dealer, asks Arthur to write a
story about he and his wife Daria. Arthur's writing a story
from Krekov's point of view. The couple collects art
and tries to make ends meet. Daria gets to know a rich aspiring
artist, Gregory Melon. The couple wants to get Melon's works
from him for free. Melon does give away works — but only to
successful families. He tells Arthur he knows they're not a real
family, but impostors. The couple escapes and hides.
Arthur finds a place to stay, but loses touch with Daria and
lives there alone. One day, a policeman visits him – in
connection with Daria. He escapes the policeman, tries to
call Krekov, and understands that his identity has dissolved
in Krekov's – who wanted Arthur to get rid of Daria on his
behalf. Arthur understands Daria is dead, and knows where
she's buried. He gets in touch with the police and tells
them the story.
