Dominic Lopes, author of A Philosophy of Computer Art (Routledge, 2009),
will talk about his book to the group of x on Friday September 28. Doors
open at 7pm and Dom starts 7:30-7:45pm. Discussion will take place after his
talk.

Dom teaches philosophy at UBC.

Dom's book is the first by a professional philosopher on the subject of
computer art. One could say--quite loosely--that there are several books,
such as Manovitch's The Language of New Media, which seek to develop a
philosophy of computer art, where computer art is art in which the computer
is crucial as medium. How do such approaches differ from what a philosopher
might consider to be a philosophy of computer art? What is a 'philosophy of
computer art?' Pick up Dom's book before the event and find out.

DOMINIC LOPES BIO

Dominic Lopes is Distinguished University Scholar and Professor in the
Department of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. He works
mainly in aesthetics and is a member of the UBC aesthetics group. His
research focusses on pictorial representation and perception; the aesthetic
and epistemic value of pictures, including scientific images; theories of
art and its value; the ontology of art; and computer art and new art forms.
He is working on a pair of books entitled Beyond Art and Four Arts of
Photography and has just co-edited (with Diarmuid Costello) a special issue
of the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism on the media of photography.

Paloma Atencia-Linares recently interviewed him on the topic of "Pictures,
Bytes and Values" for the Postgraduate Journal of Aesthetics.

Lopes is Vice-President of the American Society for Aesthetics (and will be
president in 2013-15). He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the
British Society of Aesthetics, Secretary-Treasurer of the American
Philosophical Association Pacific Division, a member of the Editorial Board
of the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, and co-editor (with Berys
Gaut) of Wiley-Blackwell's New Directions in Aesthetics book series. He
served for three years as an Associate Dean in the UBC Faculty of Arts.

LOCATION

Dom's talk will be the first at our new location for group of x
get-togethers, thanks to Arne Eigenfeldt: at SFU downtown in the Goldcorp
Centre for the Arts at 149 West Hastings street in room 3420, the third
floor electroacoustic studio. There's great tech available here and more
space than in my apartment. But food and drink are not permitted in the
studio. After Dom's talk and the discussion, let's head over to Charles Bar
(or wherever we figure would be good).
