The above URL links to the poster for The Line Has Shattered, a new
documentary by Robert McTavish about the 1963 poetry conference in Vancouver
that shaped BC poets such as Fred Wah, Lionel Kearns, Jamie Reid, Daphne
Marlatt, Phyllis Webb (narrator of the documentary), George Bowering and
involved USAmerican poets such as Ginsberg, Olson, Creeley, Duncan and
Levertov. As well as Margaret Avison and possibly other Canadian poets. The
premiere of the documentary will be on March 21 at 7:30 at SFU Woodwards
downtown. Fred Wah will introduce McTavish and his film.
I've heard a lot about this 1963 conference as being an important moment of
change and maturation in BC and Canadian poetry to openness and
participation in the avant garde of USAmerican poetics. And, beyond that
participation in relatively mature poetics located elsewhere, movement to
our own poetics.
