Computer Science/Media Studies - Assistant Professor

The Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences (IKBSAS) at the 
University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus, invites applications 
for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computer Science, 
with a focus on User Experience (UX) and specialization in any of the 
following areas: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), data visualization, 
animation, virtual/augmented/mixed reality. The appointment is expected 
to start on July 1, 2018, or soon thereafter.

This is a joint appointment in the Media Studies program 
(https://mediastudies.ok.ubc.ca), which is offered collaboratively by 
the IKBSAS (http://ikbsas.ok.ubc.ca/welcome.html) and the Faculty of 
Creative and Critical Studies (http://fccs.ok.ubc.ca/welcome.html). The 
successful candidate will be based in the Department of Computer 
Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics 
(http://cosc.ok.ubc.ca/welcome.html).

Applicants must have a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related 
field with a focus area related to media studies. Candidates must have a 
demonstrated record of research productivity and proven ability to 
obtain external funding in support of a successful program of research. 
They must also demonstrate commitment to student mentoring and 
supervision, excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching 
appropriate to career stage, and an interest in graduate supervision.

The ability to integrate one's expertise into ongoing scholarly 
activities in the department and on campus, and to enhance existing 
strengths in Computer Science, Data Science, Media Studies, Mathematics, 
Optimization, and/or Engineering is highly desirable and will be a 
significant asset. The appointee is also expected to make connections 
with industry partners to support research and learning partnerships.

The successful candidate should be able to teach in core areas of 
computer science, with a particular focus on courses within the recently 
launched media studies program. The individual will also have the 
opportunity to contribute to further development of the curriculum; 
supervise undergraduate and graduate students; and fulfill service 
obligations to the University and community.

The Department is housed in the vibrant Irving K. Barber School of Arts 
and Sciences. The Faculty offers both discipline-based and 
interdisciplinary programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The
