The Emulated version of First Screening

On this page you can

  • download the original .DSK file of First Screening that bp Nichol created using Apple Basic for the Apple IIe in 1983-84; this was distributed as the Underwhich edition;
  • download a program that emulates the Apple IIe on PCs or Macs;
  • play First Screening on your computer through the emulator;
  • view the printed matter included with the Underwhich edition of First Screening;
  • view the original source code.

Instructions (PC)

  • Download and unzip the original DSK file. The zip file contains FirstScreening.dsk (which is in DOS 3.3 format, which the original was in); FirstScreening.po (in ProDOS format) and FirstScreeningBybpNichol.txt, which is a text file of the source code.
  • Download and unzip the Applewin emulator. Alternatively, do an Internet search of 'emulator' and 'Apple IIe' and pick a different emulator.
  • Run the Applewin.exe emulator.
  • Click the icon.
  • Navigate to FirstScreening.dsk (or FirstScreening.po) and double-click it .
  • Click the button.
  • If it does not start by itself, type
    RUN FIRST SCREENING
    and press the “Enter” key.
  • When First Screening halts, you are given instructions on how to run "Off-Screen Romance". Try any of these:
    RUN  1748
    RUN 1748-
    GOSUB 1748
    GOSUB 1748-
    GOSUB 1600

Instructions (Mac)

http://apple2.intergalactic.de ("OSXII", an Apple //e emulator for Mac OS X utilizing Cocoa and OpenGL) is an emulator we hear works properly on some Macs. Another is Virtual ][ at http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/VirtualII

An incomplete list of Apple IIe emulators for the Mac is at http://www.zophar.net/mac/apple2.html (this list doesn't include "OSXII"). Many of these haven't worked for us.

In the meantime, Mac users can view the JavaScript version or the QuickTime version.
